Why is bleach and baking soda the best products for cleaning and disinfecting?

I havent found one product that cleans as well as baking soda or bleach.

I use baking soda for a plethora of uses from getting stains off my plates, coffee pot, cups, utensils, to deodorize my carpet, refridgerator, and even brushing my teeth with occasionally to keep them white.

I use bleach for countertops, sinks, tile floors, toilet, and washing clothes. I always use a tablespoon of bleach in a quart of water. Rule of thumb is if you smell bleach in your house then you used too much. Sometimes I dilute bleach, dish soap, warm water to clean my tile floors. Excellent!
A little bleach goes a long way and always dilute, dilute, dilute.

I swear by bleach and baking soda for awesome cleaning ability. My house always smells fresh and clean. I never have to use fragrances anymore.

I have tryed lysol, ammonia, kitchen cleaners, bathroom cleaners, 409, etc, and they dont even come close to bleach or baking soda. Vingegar didnt make the cut because it stinks.

My next goal is to find the best bar of soap on the market. So far i use Dial and it does what it says–kills body odor and stay fresh all day. Whats your best soap that you always go back to?

Can you think of any awesome cleaning product that you swear by?

What's the best way to clean the carpet in a car?

I managed to take a hard left and sent a Pepsi flying. Tried those spray foam cleaners a while back on a real floor with white carpet, and I wasn’t impressed, but is that the best way to go, or should I try some diluted ammonia or the like?

I’m out in the driveway now cleaning the floor mats – lemme know whatcha think :)
And anyone has any idea how to get the stink out of my trunk I would greatly appreciate it. I have no idea what it is…only thing in the trunk is a spare and a lawn chair. Not a mildew smell or anything indicating that something got wet – it’s that oily smell of a mechanics shop….

Dog pee smell stuck in rug for months…how to get out?

Here’s my problem…
I took in a foster dog for about a month (into my condo).
I left the dog alone a few times for no more than 4 hours and the dog never pissed in the house in front of me. There were no visible signs of the dog peeing on the carpet, no stains or anything (note: I have very thick carpet).

However about 1 month after I gave the second dog back, I noticed the whole room was starting to smell slightly like piss…but had no clue from where.
So I sniffed with my own nose and found about 6 spread out locations (it’s like the dog walked as he pissed while I was gone).

Now I’ve tried everything: baking soda, carpet shampoo, laundry detergent, enzymatic cleaners like Nature’s Miracle…and let the whole place air out afterward…no luck.
In fact the smell kept on getting worse and the only cleaner that seemed to help at all was Nature’s Miracle (enzyme-based cleaner) and it only seemed to really help for about a day.

I recently (IE today) dumped a few gallons of ammonia on the bad spots of my carpet. I guess my question is how soaked do I have to get my carpet (and with how much per gallon of what cleaner?) to get rid of this terrible smell that only seems to get worse over time.
